Looking after clubs I hear many Golfers say that they do not manage to get any spin when they hit the ball. Sometimes it is because of their swing but most of the time it is because they have not cleaned their clubs and the grooves are full of soil or grass. If the grooves are blocked, the club face will not grip the ball so therefore the ball will not spin.
To clean the heads is simple. Just place them in lukewarm water (not HOT) with some washing up liquid in and leave for about half an hour or longer if they are very dirty. Then with a stiff bristled brush scrub the grooves out then wipe with a towel. You can spray them with a light oil (WD40) to stop them going rusty but it is not really required. If the grooves are worn you can get them re-grooved for a small cost and if you would like to get even more spin you can get the face of the clubs sandblasted.
Now, the grips also need cleaning. Your hands get very dirty whilst playing golf from picking up the ball and tees and all this is transferred to the grips of your clubs.
To clean the grips you need warm water, some washing up liquid and a cleaning scourer (NOT a scotchbrite). Put some washing up liquid on the grips with a little water and scrub the grip until the whole grip is covered with foam, and then wash off with water and towel dry. Do NOT soak the grips in water because if the shaft is not sealed at the top moisture can get down to the head and start to cause rust. If you have steel shafts, then the shaft could break.
I recommend that you should clean your grips once a month and the heads after every time you play.Whilst cleaning your clubs you should also check that your ferrules are not loose or have moved. This could mean that you head maybe about to fall off but most important water can get between the ferrule and the head and if you have steel shafts this can cause rust and the shaft may break. With graphite shafts you must check that there are no nicks in the shaft which can cause a weakness and therefore may break.
