Spangles celebrated their fifth anniversary in true barbershop style recently  at the Aparthotel Bahia in San Pedro del Pinatar. Guest of honour from the UK was Duncan Whinyates, Musical Director of ‘Anvil Chorus’, gold medallist and lead singer with ‘Crossfire’ quartet. “I was delighted to be invited to coach Spangles and they have been such a co-operative and fun group of ladies” he said. “Everyone has made me feel so welcome and they have been a pleasure to work with.”

“The change in our sound and overall performance is truly amazing” commented Gail Grainger, Musical Director of Spangles. “Duncan has so much barbershop experience and is such an inspiration; he made the whole experience such fun for everyone. We’re putting all his excellent coaching into practice now. Everyone is so fired up after such a brilliant weekend.”

In the evening, Spangles held a celebratory dinner at the Hotel Traiña, with guests from the Torrevieja Harmonisers, The Velvetones and Q4. Founders, Lyn Baines and Anthea Prentice, took this opportunity to thank everyone who has helped them grow the chorus from just five ladies in 2004 to more than 40 in 2009.

Presentations on the night included Jill Chorley (Baritone) as ‘Barbershopper of the Year’. “Jill has worked quietly and diligently in the background on several chorus projects and justly deserves the award” said Barbara Burks, winner of the 2008 award.  Jill was totally taken by surprise “I couldn’t believe it when they called out my name. I absolutely love being part of Spangles; it’s a great hobby and I’ve made some really good friends.” she said. Stella O’Hagan (Lead) was presented with the Addis Cup for the ‘most improved Spangle’ and Alan Hutchings, Mike Phillips, Adrian Chorley and Bill Pearce received special Spangles polo-shirts in recognition of their help and support at every Spangles event. A commemorative plaque was presented to Spangles by Ena Fraser, Chairman of The Velvetones.

The evening was in full swing until the early hours of the morning, with everyone, naturally, singing in four part harmony. Here’s to the next five years!
